As a longtime Windows WinHelp developer, I agree with you 100% on your observations in How to Publish a Great User Manual.
I am a connoisseur of fine manuals and online help. Extensis Corporation, makers of the finest Photoshop plugin filters, produces consistently fantastic manuals. I rely on their PDF manuals because I typically buy software for immediate download from the Net. Have never experienced a moment of trouble with Extensis PDF manuals. Their hardcopy manuals are also excellent.
Although not a vendor's manual, I found the IDG book TEACH YOURSELF ACCESS 97 VISUALLY to be the most stunning and superbly simple product guide I've ever seen. Check out ISBN 0-7065-6026-3. It is a visual delight which clearly delineates topics into understandable components. I purchased my copy at Borders booksellers and don't regret a dime of the expenditure. I only wish Microsoft had included the guide in my Access 97 application package.
